Emotions have energy
What we think of as emotion is the experience of energy moving through the body. Emotions are a normal part of being human and just like all energy, it must flow appropriately.
According to traditional Chinese medicine, emotions are one of the three causes of diseases and when out of balance, they can affect different organs, different functions in your body, your thinking and even your spirit and your spiritual values.
There are seven different emotions (grief, melancholy, fear, fright, anger, joy & worry) that are each associated with a corresponding element and organ in the body:
Grief and melancholy injure the lungs
Fear and fright injures the kidneys
Anger injures the liver
Joy injures the heart
Worry injures the spleen
The reverse is also true, an injury to the internal organs may cause an emotional disturbance. For example, a liver disorder may cause anger. In addition, the flow of qi is affected by the emotions:
Grief and melancholy consume qi
Fear causes qi to descend
Fright disperses the qi
Anger causes qi to rise and causes qi stagnation
Joy slows qi
Worry causes qi stagnation
The Ying and Yang of emotions:
Yin emotions: sorrow, sadness, fear, depression
Yang emotions: Anger, happiness, fright, love, pride
